The First Real Day

Good morning and welcome to 2008.

Today is the first real day of the year. Yesterday doesn't really count, what with sitting around the house watching football games and movies all day.

Biggest disappointment of the day: Well, there were actually two. USC - Illinois and Georgia - Hawaii. I really had no stake in the Rose Bowl, just couldn't get excited over that matchup. And then USC pretty much obliterated Illinois. But, oh man, was I ever pulling for Hawaii to win (or at least make a good showing). Yeah . . . that dream was over after Georgia's second drive. I hope this doesn't deter the BCS gods from selecting a non-power conference for a bowl game in the future.

Best game of the day: Again, there were two. Michigan - Florida and Buffalo - Pittsburgh. Lloyd Carr retired and coached his last game for UM. Their seniors were 0-4 against their arch rivals OSU and 0-3 in bowl games (I think I got that right). It was great to see both of them, Carr and the seniors, go out on a winning note. And yes, Buffalo and Pittsburgh wasn't a bowl game, but what can you say about hockey . . . outdoors . . . in the snow . . . with 70,000 people in the stands . . . except -- WOW. And that was a great game. Even if the hometown Sabers lost in a shootout.

Today, though, it's back to work. I need to follow up with a body shop about that little incident with the deer. It's Wednesday, so I also have a ministerial association meeting -- maybe. Call the organist with Sunday hymns, do some sermonizing, finish cleaning up the church after our incident with the wayward tree, and need to call the diocesan office about a few matters. Oh, and it's the first bar night of 2008.

What will 2008 be like? Pretty much like 2007 I would expect.

Watched the end of the Michigan game and most of the USC game. I care not a whit about either but our rector is from a huge USC family and the assoc. Rector (his wife) is from a huge Michigan family. So it's just an excuse to hang out with people I like.

The hockey game was primo however! As a Pittsburgh boy living in WNY I get to just root for good hockey and can be happy no matter who wins (OK slight edge to the Pens). So it was great. We live in the same snow band so we got about a foot by this morning. Thank God for snow blowers.

2008 is off to a rotten start. Someone backed into my car while at the rectory last night. $900 damage. Sigh.

I hope this year gets better.
