Today we went into Schwerin. On our way there, we stopped at Sternberg to look at a church (what else . . . I am visiting a whole lot of churches). It was amazing, as all of them are. And for a fee we were allowed to climb to the top of the tower. What an incredible view. And it really is sort of fun to go climbing through places that you would expect to find Quasimodo living. Got some good pictures that I think Mrs. Ref will post up to her Facebook account.
From there made our way to Schwerin. We toured the town cathedral (every town has a cathedral) and two other churches (and every town has other parish churches). The cathedral is always the biggest church, but the parish churches aren't what you would call small. And they're all really really really old (the town of Schwerin recently celebrated their 850th anniversary -- yes 850 -- what do you give for an 850th birthday present?). I managed to climb the pulpit in two of them. Yes, you have to climb the pulpit to look down on the people so they can see you.
We also took in an organ concert in the cathedral and toured one absolutely fabulously amazing castle. Our hostess said it was the best castle in all of Mecklenburg state and probably all of Germany. I'm thinking she's right.
We had a great dinner, a great dessert, and now I'm about ready to enjoy an evening glass of wine before heading off to bed.
Great trip, great hosts, great food, and a great big fat gut by the time I'm done here.

in a church of that size you would have to preach from the pulpit...that is the only way you can see everyone at church and see who is sleeping through your sermons.
