'Tis the Season

I was away most of this week at our annual clergy conference.  It's held at the lovely Oregon Gardens.

But I'm not talking about the conference . . . I'm talking about a phone call.

On the way up to the conference I received a phone call from a gal who wanted to know "if you marry people . . . We're getting married on June 21 and we're looking for a priest."

And here we go .....

Don't you just wonder why these couples want a "church" wedding? For most of them, the wedding is only a stop-off point between living together and the divorce court. And six weeks counseling? Good luck with that.

I know why they want a "church" wedding. And I'm not so sure about the stop-off point thing -- there are a fair amount of long-term marriages that didn't start in a church.

That said, when I hand them the Wedding Guide booklet, that's usually the last I hear from them.
