The Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefforts Schori is the new Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church.
Personally, I think this is a good thing. I think it's good because, while all of the nominees were qualified, she seemed to be the "cream of the crop," so to speak. The church has done a good thing by electing the best person for the job.
I'm sure, however, that this will cause the Global South (at least) and conservative churchmen everywhere to go into a tail-spin. I can hear it now . . . "This church, which had the opportunity to repent and change its course, has chosen the wide open, well-oiled path to apostasy and heresy and it has chosen to remove itself not only from the Anglican Communion, but from all orthodox churches worldwide."
Now, to be honest, I haven't read any comments, so I could be totally wrong (and will say so if that turns out to be the case).
Addendum 6/19: Yep, pretty much. You can start here and roam from there. I won't post more than this one link though.
Honestly though, I can't imagine what the gripe would be; at least she's straight.

A Few Words About Comments
Comments are always welcome here, but there are a few things you should know:
1) If you comment, leave a name. If you can't figure out how to log in or register or whatever the system is making you do (which, believe me, I fully understand how frustrating that can be) and you must comment anonymously . . . leave a name in the comment section. Purely anonymous comments will be deleted.
2) Comments I deem to be offensive, irrelevant, or generally trollish will be deleted. I'm mainly talking to the Akurians here. Don't make me get out my flag!
3) If you would like to receive e-mail notification of other comments so you can more easily follow a conversation (yeah, like I ever have those on this blog), you must register with Blogger. Sorry . . . I didn't have anything to do with that one.
Enjoy the game.

Wow is right.
Your version of the global south reply is pretty close to what I'm reading and seeing *sigh*.
Then again, you said,
Honestly though, I can't imagine what the gripe would be; at least she's straight.
but you know we womenfolk -- never knowing when to cower politely in the corner. So many great lines came to mind when I found out about the election, but most of them can't be shared in mixed company. ;-)
My prayers are with her and with us all.
Oh, but you make me laugh! :)
And I've just read that the U.S. now joins only Canada and New Zealand in allowing women to be bishops. Those are the only two other countries to which I've considered moving!
Brooke,
The ECUSA has allowed women bishops for quite a while now, but I believe she's the first female primate in the Anglican Communion.
Dawg is right: Bishop Schori has become the first primate in the Anglican Communion; or any other mainline Christian church for that matter.
Not to quibble, especially since only Anglicans/Episcopalians, Roman Catholics, and Eastern and Oriental Orthodox churchs use the term primate to the best of my knowledge, but the Presbyterians elected a woman to their national leadershop post a few hours before the HoB finished voting. I also think that the national leaders (whatever the denominational term is) for the United Methodists and Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are both women. And I am fairly certain that the UCC has also had a female leader before now.
This is not to denigrate what has happened in Columbus. It is a wonderful thing for our denomination and for the Anglican Communion as a whole. In 30 years we have gone from threatened presentments for ordaining a woman, to selecting one as Presiding Bishop and Primate. Maybe a leopard really can change it's spots.
May God bless and keep her and all of us through the work that remains ahead.
J. Fred
hee hee hee. Yup. You were a prophet; that's exactly what they've been saying. Unfortunately.
Cheers to PB-elect Schori! I think she'll be great. If there's a message here to the Global South, may they understand it.
drpcp---here's what you can say in mixed company: "Schori's got chutzpah!"
