HIKING RETREAT IN CODY, WY

I took a weekend for a spiritual hiking retreat at Thomas the Apostle Center (TAC) just west of Cody. It's a small place with a wonderful host and hostess (they took very good care of me). In the "front yard" is this sculpture -- "My Lord and My God." Off in the distance is Heart Mountain (sort of hard to see because I wasn't focused on it). That small group of buildings in the background would be the Cody Airport; or, more correctly, the "Yellowstone Regional Airport -- Serving the World."
===================
This is the range just to the west of the parking lot at the trail head. We didn't hike in that range, but just over those mountains is Yellowstone National Park.
=====================
We hiked the Clear Creek trail. We only went about 3-1/2 miles in. After that, it got sort of rough going. Besides, there was a nice spot for lunch. We had to cross Clear Creek twice. This was the first time.
====================
This area of the country is Grizzly bear territory. Even on casual hikes you never know when you'll run into one. Consequently, everyone who ventures out into the back country is strongly advised to carry bear repellent. The can has instructions not to spray the stuff on you. Apparently some people thought that bear repellent was to be used like mosquito repellent. Darwinism at work . . .
===================
I didn't see any bears, but the point man did. He came over a rise that led down into Clear Creek when he happened upon a mama black bear and two cubs. Luckily she was too busy tending to her cubs to notice us. So, I never actually saw bears, just evidence that they were there.
==================
And this was just a cool rock formation that I saw on the trip.
============
This is called Wayfarers Chapel. The priest who led the retreat had this place built a few years ago. As they were designing it, they discovered that it sat not far from a well-traveled Grizzly path. Turns out that they actually had one show up at church one day, but he wasn't interested in staying.
==========
So, that was the weekend. That part of WY is absolutely gorgeous, and I kept wondering who had the difficult task of deciding where Yellowstone ended. I've got more pictures that I'll put on here in a bit for your enjoyment.

A Few Words About Comments
Comments are always welcome here, but there are a few things you should know:
1) If you comment, leave a name. If you can't figure out how to log in or register or whatever the system is making you do (which, believe me, I fully understand how frustrating that can be) and you must comment anonymously . . . leave a name in the comment section. Purely anonymous comments will be deleted.
2) Comments I deem to be offensive, irrelevant, or generally trollish will be deleted. I'm mainly talking to the Akurians here. Don't make me get out my flag!
3) If you would like to receive e-mail notification of other comments so you can more easily follow a conversation (yeah, like I ever have those on this blog), you must register with Blogger. Sorry . . . I didn't have anything to do with that one.
Enjoy the game.

Looks like a great trip Ref
Nice pictures.
My dad spent some time near Heart Mountain. One of these days I'll have to visit.
found you through a comment on a friends blog (Sophia). I Love Wyoming. I worked there for a summer once and a good friend grew up in Cody. Wayfarer's Chapel is beautiful. Thanks for the pictures!
ymp
Thanks for stopping by. I have more pics of WY that I want to put up, but that's too much like work during vacation.
Hi!
Thanks for the change to middler status on your blogroll! That makes me smile, especially after completing 10 weeks of CPE (Just 4 more days to go!)
Nice photos. Since I'm from the East and used to tiny black bears the idea of a grizzly bear showing up for Eucharist kind of shocked me... :-)
