So I'm just cruising around the net checking up on recent postings and whatnot because it's a lazy Saturday morning (the business will come later), and I ran across this post over at Talk to Action.
You may have seen the news item about SBC pastor Wiley Drake who is advocating imprecatory prayer to smite his enemies -- those being all the people who advocate for the separation of church and state. Seems he thinks a U.S. theocracy is the only way to go, and those who disagree are enemies of Drake, God and human decency everywhere and should be struck dead on the spot.
But what caught my attention about the T2A post was this comment from Drake:
"I have never have been worried about the IRS," he said. "They don't scare me. I don't give a rip about the IRS. I don't believe in the separation of church and state and I believe the IRS should stay out of church business."
Let me see . . . he doesn't believe in the separation of church and state. He believes the IRS should stay out of church business. The IRS, last time I looked, was a state agency.
So if the IRS is a state agency, and there is no separation of church and state, shouldn't the IRS have as much free access to the church as they want? I mean, isn't this a little bit like the R&D department head saying, "I believe the accounting department should stay out of the R&D department"?
What am I missing here?

A Few Words About Comments
Comments are always welcome here, but there are a few things you should know:
1) If you comment, leave a name. If you can't figure out how to log in or register or whatever the system is making you do (which, believe me, I fully understand how frustrating that can be) and you must comment anonymously . . . leave a name in the comment section. Purely anonymous comments will be deleted.
2) Comments I deem to be offensive, irrelevant, or generally trollish will be deleted. I'm mainly talking to the Akurians here. Don't make me get out my flag!
3) If you would like to receive e-mail notification of other comments so you can more easily follow a conversation (yeah, like I ever have those on this blog), you must register with Blogger. Sorry . . . I didn't have anything to do with that one.
Enjoy the game.

Can't help you out on this. It doesn't make sense to me at all. At. All.
But... thanks for coming my way. I promise I don't always post long sermons begging for feedback.
I live and serve in northern New York. I'm anonomousish on my blog so that's as much as I'm comfortable saying right now! One of these days I'll get a g-mail account tied into my blog (hopefully soon) and you can drop me a line and I'd be happy to get acquainted. I've been at this rural (solo) ministry thing for five years now. Three for you? Is this your first call?
So far as I can read, you are not missing anything. It would seem to me, however, that Rev. Drake is missing a logic center, by a very wide margin.
MC: Thanks for stopping by. New York, huh? So much for meeting for lunch.
Yes, this is my first call. Graduated from seminary in June of '04, ordained to the diaconate same month, and priested in December. I came to my present post in July of '04. So there's some background.
Jane: Thanks for double checking.
i'm just two years ahead of you in this process. graduated in 02, ordained in 02 (only one ordination for we presbys), started here in july of 02.
lunch is probably not an option. bummer.
