This is why I'm not sleeping . . .

When we had the new bell tower installed, it was painted white, just like the old one.

The church needs a new paint job, and has for years. You can go to the parish website (www.rvec.org) to see what kind of shape it's in. The summer after the bell tower went in, I had a painter come to me and say, "I'll paint the doors and the immediate surrounding area for not a whole lot of money."

We had the doors painted red because all church doors should be red. And I had the area around the doors painted white. That would match the bell tower and it would make the doors stand out.

Apparently I was the only one who liked the white. The majority of the congregation wanted the church to be gray, "Like it's always been."

Well . . . the church, to me, looked like it had been white with battleship gray trim to me. Figuring this wasn't a ditch I wanted to die in, I agreed to go with gray. A parishioner offered to pay for the painting of the east side. I had the local paint supplier come by and we looked at various shades of gray and determined that Pittsburgh's 515-4 Moth Gray was the best choice.

This, my dear readers, is Moth Gray. It's more taupe than gray.

So here's the east side of the church and a close up of the front door area.

I'm now debating about the trim and fascia area. The remaining white around the doors doesn't look too bad, and it makes them stand out a little. If we had the fascia painted that same white, it might complement the bell tower.

And maybe if I tell the congregation to not make a snap judgment about the color, it might be okay.

And this is why I'm not sleeping tonight. I'm spending my night wondering what kind of comments I'll get in the morning. And what my generous parishioner will say about "his" paint job. And wishing that daylight savings time ended last week so that I didn't have an extra hour to worry about it all.

P.S. Due to a couple of poor weather days, the job didn't get entirely finished; which is why the north door is still in primer condition and the windows are taped over.

I'm glad you will not die in this ditch. Seriously.

Isn't it funny how we get stuck in these ruts, resistant to change? As a complete stranger, looking in from the outside, I like the color combination.

I've lived in Central America too long; I find these "colours" used in the U.S. to be so drab. Here things are painted bright, vibrant colours.
I can't imagine anyone at Parroquia San Cristóbal wanting the building to be painted gray.
Good luck with all this!
