Football

I came home from the office today and turned on the local NBC news to see if my piece was on.  It wasn't, so I'll have to check back at 6.

Tonight is also the first preseason football game that I'm able to watch.  After the 5 p.m. newscast, I turned the TV over to ESPN to catch the preseason game between San Diego and Green Bay.

The big issue (for me) isn't the game or the players or the strategy -- it's the officials; and for a number of reasons.

1.  I always like watching the NFL officials work and see how they do things.

2.  The regular NFL officials have been locked out by the league in a contract dispute, so they are using replacement NCAA officials.  I learned that the league isn't using men from the PAC-12, Big 10 or other major conferences, but using officials from lower levels of college.  It has something to do with how the guys need to commit to their schedules and the need for NFL officials to arrive at the game site on Saturday.

3.  And . . . um . . . those "guys" I mentioned above . . . aren't all guys.  The NFL has hired its very first woman to officiate a game.  Now, I'm not necessarily happy that the league has to use replacement officials; but, hey . . . THE FIRST WOMAN TO WORK AN NFL GAME is on TV tonight.  Her name is Shannon Eastin.

You go girl!

Awesome!!! Except for how it crushed my dream to be the first. But that wasn't likely to happen soon, so yay Shannon Eastin!

Yes, but I bet Shannon never officiated a game between seminaries.
