If you've spent any time recently watching ESPN or even the nightly sports report on your local channel, you have no doubt seen the incident when Tennessee player Albert Haynesworth stepped on the head of Dallas center Andre Gurode last Sunday. Two things immediately caught my eye (bad pun, I know) when I saw it:
1) Football is a rough game, but that was totally uncalled for. Seriously, he could've poked an eye out!
2) If you happened to be watching the Back Judge, you noticed that as soon as the incident occurred, he was tossing his flag into the air and moving in. And that, my friends, is what we call "dead ball officiating." Great job! NFL officials are rated on every play of every game. It's an intense hobby. This guy will score some major points with the home office.
Okay ... so it's been established that Albert stepped on the head of defenseless Andre. What was it that Hook said .... "Bad form!" Albert had a bad few minutes, because he was also penalized for removing his helmet on the field and was ejected.
He has been suspended five games by the league office, and Tennessee is currently evaluating his status with the team. It was a bad day at the office.
So here's where I give Albert Haynesworth a break: He apologized for the incident. It may not have been the best apology on record, but he did it. This wasn't some mealy-mouthed apology issued on his behalf by some slicked up sports agent. It wasn't some prepared statement written by that same slicked up sports agent that he read without looking at the camera. Albert apologized for his actions. I can live with that.
Second, he chose not to appeal the five game suspension handed down by the NFL. He basically said, "I screwed up and I get what I deserve and I'm not going to whine about it." The NFLPA had wanted him to appeal the suspension because it was the harshest penalty issued to date. Another reason lawyers get a bad rap. Albert Haynesworth should be commended for admitting to his actions and taking the punishment.
And as the song goes, "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime." He did the crime. He's doing the time. And he's not whining about it.

A Few Words About Comments
Comments are always welcome here, but there are a few things you should know:
1) If you comment, leave a name. If you can't figure out how to log in or register or whatever the system is making you do (which, believe me, I fully understand how frustrating that can be) and you must comment anonymously . . . leave a name in the comment section. Purely anonymous comments will be deleted.
2) Comments I deem to be offensive, irrelevant, or generally trollish will be deleted. I'm mainly talking to the Akurians here. Don't make me get out my flag!
3) If you would like to receive e-mail notification of other comments so you can more easily follow a conversation (yeah, like I ever have those on this blog), you must register with Blogger. Sorry . . . I didn't have anything to do with that one.
Enjoy the game.
