So we are home from Christmas vacation. We managed the drive without any dings, so that was good news.
While there, I received a call from one of my parishioners whose husband died suddenly. I met with the family today after church to plan the memorial service. The service will be held at the local mortuary with a reception following at the Mill Creek Bar. Bar Night at the Mill Creek tomorrow should be interesting, since the deceased was part owner.
I also received one e-mail and one voice mail from people who want to get married in VC. So I will contact them, give them the requirements for that, and see if they decide to pursue it further.
Today was Christmas Lessons & Carols, so no sermon, and we had a large turnout for that in Sheridan. And speaking of weddings, the couple who were married in VC last summer came back for a visit; it was good to see them.
Today is filled with laundry and cleaning up a bit for company, as we'll have a few people over for New Year's.
Oh . . . and I received a compliment after services today. The couple mentioned that they missed my sermon today and I said, "I was on vacation last week, so we do L&C the first Sunday after Christmas. Vacation means I don't have to write a sermon."
Another gal overheard this and said, "That's what I like about you. You do the whole priest thing and spiritual thing very well, but you aren't afraid to be a regular person either," referring to my comment about not writing a sermon on my vacation.
Kind of similar to when one of the parishioners at CC tells me, "I like you because you say stuff," meaning that I occassionally use some .... colorful ... language. Yep, that's me ... just you're regular average dude in a collar.

A Few Words About Comments
Comments are always welcome here, but there are a few things you should know:
1) If you comment, leave a name. If you can't figure out how to log in or register or whatever the system is making you do (which, believe me, I fully understand how frustrating that can be) and you must comment anonymously . . . leave a name in the comment section. Purely anonymous comments will be deleted.
2) Comments I deem to be offensive, irrelevant, or generally trollish will be deleted. I'm mainly talking to the Akurians here. Don't make me get out my flag!
3) If you would like to receive e-mail notification of other comments so you can more easily follow a conversation (yeah, like I ever have those on this blog), you must register with Blogger. Sorry . . . I didn't have anything to do with that one.
Enjoy the game.

Lessons and Carols is a VERY good idea! I should have done that myself.ht
One of the nice things about this job is that you are free to incorporate good ideas without worrying too much about "the competition" ;-)
My first year here I planned an Advent L&C service. I remember going through the BOS and seeing A sermon is not a traditional part of this service on the bottom of page 34. I decided right then that a Christmas L&C service was the way to go for the Sunday after Christmas vacation.
