College Road Trip Post #1

Mrs. Ref and I are taking The Kid to college in MO.  We're taking the long way there (like there's a short way from the Left Coast to the middle of the country).

A few things we've learned so far:

1.  Before we left, The Kid asked, "What would you do if I got a boyfriend with a motorcycle?"

"We'd tell you to wear a helmet and be careful.  But I'd prefer you didn't ride one."

This morning as we were leaving Stop #1, we were listening to a morning radio program.  They were talking about an interview with Rhianen (sp?) where she discussed her relationship with Chris Brown.

Interviewer:  How has the relationship changed?
R:  Things have actually gotten a lot better since the restraining order was lifted.

Me to Kid:  Okay, if there's a choice between a guy who has a motorcycle and a guy who has a restraining order, TAKE THE BIKE.

2.  It's important to read construction signs.  As we were coming into DL, the DOT had closed down the right hand lane.  The Big Orange Construction Sign read:  Right Lane Closed; Merge Left; Exit Open.

The Kid was driving, didn't pay attention, and ended up in the exit lane, blocked by pylons from continuing on, and so down the exit ramp we went.  It was ultimately okay, though, because the freeway entrance was across the street, so we didn't really miss anything or get lost in town.

What we learned:  If you misread the Big Orange Construction Signs and head down the exit ramp, ALL OF THE CARS FOLLOWING YOU will, Leming-like, follow you down the ramp and back up onto the freeway.

And that's the update from our second day of travel.

My late husband didn't believe in detour signs. He would go around them ever single time. Once there was a bridge out about five miles down the road, so of course we went ten miles out of our way, with his cussing all the way back. "Why don't they make these things so people know they mean them?"

He's really lucky he died a natural death.
