Invisible no more

So much for my plan of "out of sight, out of mind." Because, honestly, if I had it my way, I'd be left alone to concentrate on serving my [not so] little parish here in southern Oregon.

This week I received a letter from the bishop asking me to "consider serving" on the initial diocesan camp board as the diocese transitions from their own, single camp to a camping ministry that makes use of three other camps run and owned by the UMC.

Last night I was nominated to serve on the board for my new football officials' association.

And this morning I opened up my e-mail to a message from the bishop's executive assistant notifying me that the bishop would like to appoint me as dean of the convocation (deanery for some of you).

Guess which one I was most happy to be nominated for?

And is it really possible to tell the bishop, "With all due respect . . . thanks but no thanks."

Oh, dear. What happens when one is called, but doesn't wish to be chosen? Telling the bishop you have a "previous engagement" probably won't work, will it?

Just count me in as yet another in a long line of people called but not wishing to be chosen . . .
